Cardiovascular disease
(CVD) is the
leading cause of death and disability in the United States. As
strong proponents of preventive cardiology, we favor a pro-active
approach.
1. Primary
Prevention:
This involves modification of risk factors such as hypertension,
smoking, sedentary lifestyle and elevated cholesterol.
Additional measures may be appropriate for diabetics and those with a
strong family history of CVD.
2.
Secondary
Prevention: If
CVD is already present (with or without symptoms), prevention means
combining risk factor modification with appropriate modern
treatment options.
All
patients receive a thorough evaluation including:
- Comprehensive
medical history
- Physical
examination
- Lab tests
(including lipid analysis, HDL/LDL, triglycerides, homocysteine,
C-reactive protein, Lp (a), LDL particle size and concentration
- Electrocardiogram
- Other
screening tests as deemed appropriate by the cardiologist
